For more almost 50 years, the EWFL has given young athletes from across eastern NC the opportunity to learn youth football at it's highest level. Young athletes have joined our associated teams for years because of the track record for integrity, knowledgeable coaching, peak experience, and competitive play.
The East Wake Football League began in 1968 with the following founding teams:
Mr. W.G. Griswold of Zebulon has been credited with helping assemble this original group of teams. Our current Commissioner, Jimmy Massey, was a coach and then a leader in the Knightdale program beginning in 1995. Jimmy has lead our organization since 2000 when the previous Commissioner Dennis Coley fell ill to Cancer. We dedicate our proceeds to Commissioner Coley’s honor still today through the American Cancer Society.
When the league first started it only had two (2) divisions: Mighty Mites and Pee Wee. Eventually, the Mini Mite division was formed from the “5th quarter” of the Mighty Mite games. There is now a “5th quarter” game before our Mini Mite division for beginning players under a “coach on-the-field” scrimmage style format
The league has continued its growth to its present form consisting of 16 teams from 15 townships in five (5) counties.
We have a number of our coaches that played in the EWFL during their youth as well as multiple coaches that have returned year after year. We celebrate the following coaches:
- Coach John Easters of Wendell - Coach and Commissioner Jimmy Massey of Knightdale - Coach Wes Hill of Clayton - Coach Len Boykin of Wendell - Coach Teddy Strickland of Wendell
- Coach Danny Blake of Wake Forest - Coach Everett Bailey of Wake Forest
- Coach Tookie Gullie of Wendell
Please let us know if your coach has reached any of these phenomenal milestones!
In 1995, the league instituted a championship playoff to crown the ultimate division champions each season. The following are our past champions.
