East Wake Football League

Where football begins and a tradition continues. The EWFL has provided football in Wake County and the surrounding counties for over 40 years.

I'm a parent looking for more information on how to register my child to play in a EWFL team.

I'm a coach and looking to get more information about training, membership, and other administrative tools.

About EWFL

Welcome to the East Wake Football League (EWFL)! We are an independent youth football league with representative teams within the five county area including Durham, Granville, Franklin, Johnston, and Wake Counties.

Since safety and transparencey are important elements to the EWFL, we are doing background checks for all coaches.

Coaching integrity and enthusiasm about the sport are essential elements for each EWFL coach.

EWFL is active in the community as well. To that end, all proceeds from the program go each year to support The American Cancer Society.

The EWFL is a USA Football Head’s Up Tackling Program

For more almost 50 years, the EWFL has given young athletes from across eastern NC the opportunity to learn youth football at it's highest level. Young athletes have joined our associated teams for years because of the track record for integrity, knowledgeable coaching, peak experience, and competitive play.

The East Wake Football League began in 1968 with the following founding teams:

  • Apex
  • Corinth Holders
  • Green Pines (now Knightdale)
  • Wendell
  • Wilders Grove
  • Zebulon

W.G. Griswold - EWFL Founder

Mr. W.G. Griswold of Zebulon has been credited with helping assemble this original group of teams. Our current Commissioner, Jimmy Massey, was a coach and then a leader in the Knightdale program beginning in 1995. Jimmy has lead our organization since 2000 when the previous Commissioner Dennis Coley fell ill to Cancer. We dedicate our proceeds to Commissioner Coley’s honor still today through the American Cancer Society.

When the league first started it only had two (2) divisions: Mighty Mites and Pee Wee. Eventually, the Mini Mite division was formed from the “5th quarter” of the Mighty Mite games. There is now a “5th quarter” game before our Mini Mite division for beginning players under a “coach on-the-field” scrimmage style format

The league has continued its growth to its present form consisting of 16 teams from 15 townships in five (5) counties.
